IL Poison Center: Poisoning still remains a public health problem, and is the second leading cause of injury-related deaths in the United States. The Illinois Poison Center (IPC) is a non-profit health service that provides the people of Illinois with access to comprehensive and trusted information and treatment advice on potentially harmful substances via a free, confidential 24-hour hotline. The hotline is staffed by specially trained medical experts, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. The IPC is the nation’s oldest and largest poison center in the nation and serves as the state’s leading source of advanced toxicology training and consultation for healthcare professionals. The IPC saves lives and improves patient care by working hand-in hand with hospitals in Illinois to provide expert medical advice to doctors treating patients exposed to potentially harmful substances. More than 100,000 calls were received last year of which nearly 21% of the calls were from healthcare professionals. In addition, the IPC saves the people of Illinois $50 million annually by resolving 90 percent of poisoning cases over the telephone, avoiding unnecessary 911 calls and visits to a doctor or hospital.; www.illinoispoisoncenter.org
